OBITUARY

Backelen—Mrs. Anna Backelen died at her home on McCormick street Tuesday night at 11 o’clock after a long illness. Surviving are three daughters, and one son, Albertina and Charles, at home, Mrs. Edward Brown, of this city, and Mrs. Philip Anderson, of Pinconning, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the home, with burial in Pine Ridge cemetery.

Straney—John Straney, of 108 Fraser street, died early Wednesday morning at Mercy hospital following an illness that extended over a period of four years. Mr. Straney, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 17, 1878, had spent the past 20 years in Bay City. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth, three sons, David, John, and Henry, and six daughters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Rose, Kathryn, Belinda and Josephine Marie, all of Bay City, one brother, William, and three sisters, Miss Isabelle Straney and Mrs. Rose Smith, of Bay City, and Mrs. Belinda Dolan, of Glasgow. Funeral services will be held at St. James church at 9 o’clock Saturday morning, with interment in St. Patrick’s cemetery.

OBITUARY

Williamson—Notice was received in the city today of the death yesterday at Detroit of Harry Williamson, who passed away at the home of his son. Mr. Williamson is well known in Masonic circles and has many friends in Bay City as he was a frequent visitor here, attending practically every reunion of the Scottish Rite association. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 o’clock from the Masonic temple at Detroit.

Columbus— Philip Columbus, aged 54 years, of 1707 Webster street, died at Traverse City Wednesday. He is survived by his wife, Marceline, one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Reigler, one son, Arthur Columbus, his father, Charles Columbus, one brother, John Columbus, and two grandchildren.

Boks—Miss Helen Boks, aged 20 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Boks, died at the family home, 1315 Fraser street, Tuesday, after an illness of three months. She was born in Bay City, August [Unreadable/Missing Text], 1906, and had always lived here, being a member of St. Stanislaus church, and sodality, St. Cecelia choir and the alumni association. Besides her parents, she is survived by four sisters and one brother, Mrs. Harry Janowski, of Detroit, Casimer, Stella, Isabelle and Dorothy, of this city. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Stanislaus church, with Rev. Fr. L. P. Krakowski officiation, under the auspices of the Holy Rosary society. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus cemetery.

OBITUARY

Gorton—Hammond Gorton, aged 65 years, died Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, at his home 1530 Madison avenue, north. Mr. Gorton was born October 21, 1861, at Denton’s Corners, Fulton county, New York, and on February 22, 1888 was married to Jennie Maguire, who survives him, together with two sons, Myrle and Glen, of Detroit, and three daughters, Mrs. James Moore and Mrs. Fred Papajesk, of Bay City, and Mrs. Floyd Burt, of Saginaw, one grandchild, one brother, Dell, of Flint, and one sister, Dora, of Saskatchewan, Canada. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of his daughter. Mrs. James Moore, 302 Garfield avenue.

Szymanski—Stephen Szymanski, aged 63 years, of Kawkawlin, died at Mercy hospital Monday after an illness of three days. He was born in Poland, February 26, 1863, and had been a resident of Bay county for 38 years. Surviving him are his wife, Josephine, and six children, Mrs. Anthony Tomczak, Beaver, Mrs. John Stosik, Kawkawlin, Mrs. Marian Laskowski, Bay City, Stephen, Bernice and Frank, at home. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 2 o’clock at St. Valentine’s church, of which he was a member, under the auspices of Sacred Heart society to which he also belonged. Rev. Fr. L. A. Kuzins will officiate and burial will be in St. Valentine cemetery.

Cate—Funeral services for Mrs. Mary J. Condon Cate, wife of the late Charles W. Cate, for many years a conductor on the Michigan Central railroad out of Bay City, before the family removed to Duluth, Minn., in 1890, where held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Hyatt’s chapel, the body being brought here from Duluth. Mrs. Cate is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles P. Frank, of Fort Meyers, Fla., and one son, Charles W. Cate, of Duluth; three sisters, Miss Katherine Condon and Mrs. Susan T. Seed, of New York city, and Mrs. Lillian Brand of Cleveland and two brothers, David Condon, of Chicago, and John T. Condon, of Duluth.

Kuba—Mrs. Clara Kuba, aged 33 years, died at her home in Williams township, Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock. She was born in Detroit, May 1, 1893, and was a member of the Beaver Lutheran church. Surviving her are her husband, Herman, an infant daughter, Florence, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Quenther, two brothers and two sisters, Edward and Herman Kohn of Beaver township, and Mrs. Ernest Kuba, of Williams township. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the residence and at 2 o’clock at the Beaver Lutheran church, with Rev. Fred Rutkowsky officiating. Burial will be in Beaver cemetery.

Summers—Private funeral services for Howard Summers were held this afternoon at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Taylor, of Thirty-fourth street, instead of Thursday, as previously reported.

OBITUARY

Weatherwax—Mrs. Harriet Pennell Weatherwax, a former resident of Bay City, died at her home in Grand Rapids last Wednesday after an illness of over a year. She is survived by one son, Gerald L. Weatherwax, of Los Angeles, Calif., and one daughter, Miss Jessie H. Weatherwax, and one sister, Miss Jessie E. Pennell, both of Grand Rapids, and three brothers, Don H. Pennell, and J. Wesley Pennell, of Irvington, Ala., and Charles G. Pennell, of this city.

Grow—Mrs. C. T. Grow, of Detroit, formerly of Bay City, dies at Harper hospital, Detroit, last Thursday. She was a sister of Mrs. John P. Lamber, of 1205 Fifth avenue, this city. Burial was made Saturday afternoon at Redford, Mich.

Boutell—Frank J. Boutell, formerly of this city, died at the Ford hospital in Detroit, Saturday morning after a long illness. The funeral will take place Tuesday from his residence at 1402 Court street, Flint.

Duso—Louis Jean, two weeks old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Duso, died in Detroit Saturday. The body was brought to Bay City and funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock a the home of Mrs. John Foley, 1000 Litchfield street. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
